I am in Copan
My sister has been visiting from New Zealand and weeks ago we decided to come to Copan a week before the conference to show her around before she left on the 21st. This turned about to be a fortuitous decision in light of the recent political events, as I have not been left wondering how or if I should travel to Copan. Instead we are here, being well cared for by Doña Elena at her Casa Doña Elena B&B (which I can highly recommend if you are still looking for accommodation in Copan.
Those on the forums will be aware that despite the political crisis Marco and the team are planning to continue with the conference, perhaps in a slightly abbreviated form. With a curfew still in place and airports closed it is possible that many conferees will be unable to attend, however it is still possible to get to Copan by flying into Guatemala City and travelling to the Honduran/Guatemalan border, which is then only about 12 km from Copan, and this is what conferees are being encouraged to do.
I will be very interested to see who is able to make it, and how the conference will work under such conditions. As Barbara Cáceres noted on Facebook today: “We held our Conference on Honduras in DC post 9/11, through the anthrax attacks and the Washington sniper scare. We’ve held the Conference in Honduras through mudslides and hurricanes Beta and Gamma.”. Now we’ll see if the conference can be held successfully in the midst of political turmoil.
